WHAT IS GENERALISED ANXIETY DISORDER AND WORRY?

Whilst everyone may find themselves worrying more from time to time, Generalised Anxiety Disorder is a problem where worrying and anxiety can seem uncontrollable and can significantly impact on the quality of your life.  Around 1 in 20 adults may experience GAD and struggle with a range of worries and heightened anxiety about a range of different life issues – for example, always thinking the worst if something unexpected happens, such as a partner not arriving home from work at the expected time.

People experiencing GAD often also report that they have trouble ‘switching off’ or relaxing and may experience restlessness and irritability frequently, together with physical tension in the body.  As a result of this other problems may also be present such as difficulty concentrating, having a racing mind or struggling to get enough sleep.

If this type of pattern lasts for more than 6 months it may be diagnosed as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, however even if problems are shorter than this it may be worth seeking a second opinion to see if treatment may be helpful to you.

HOW DOES IT DEVELOP?

There is a lot of research trying to answer this question currently.  It is still unclear why some people experience problems with worry and other don’t, however it is very likely that factors such as early experiences growing up – such as having anxious parents can create a vulnerability and give us learning of using worry as a strategy to deal with problems as we grow older.  Research shows that whilst worry and GAD can be a problem at any age, it most often affects those in their 20s.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR GAD AND WORRY?

Research suggests that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy produces a significant treatment benefit for Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Worry Problems and is a first line recommendation by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE.) Certain types of medications may also be recommended for Generalised Anxiety Disorder (such as an antidepressant medication called Sertraline) if requested, although the use of other medications such as benzodiazepines is not recommended.
